Narcotic drugs and psychotropic substances are known in the medical science to relieve human sufferings and ailments. These drugs and substances are indispensable for relief of pain and suffering but at the the same time lead to addiction and destruction when abused or misused. Realising the danger of drug abuse and illicit trafficking therein, the Indian parliament enacted the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act in 1985 which has been amended by the NDPS (Amendment) Act No. 2 of 1989 and the NDPS (Amendment) Act No. 9 of 2001 and the Act has three fold approach - punitive, reformative and preventive.
