The book presents a historical account of Indian administration through the various committees and commissions that were set up to examine and report on it since the earliest days of British colonisation. It attempts to introduce the reader to the several streams of thought that have contributed to the making of Indian administration, and describes all the important developments in the political and administrative system of the country. The book spans a large periodfrom the inception of the East India Company in 1773 to the Fifth Pay Commission Report of 1998.
