British Policy in India is a study of the first phase of British rule in India under the Crown. It seeks to examine the ideals and aspirations of the British parties and statesmen, their ways and methods of implementing them, and the consequences, both anticipated and unintended, of their efforts. The author has studied the private as well as the public correspondence of the viceroys, secretaries of state, and others concerned, such as Gladstone and Salisbury. A pioneering study and assessment of British policy towards India as a whole during this period, this book makes an important contribution to the current reinterpretation of British Indian history.
