Overview:

A dictionary by itself is not a literary composition, but it is extermely helpful for and of great importance in expressing the situation, condition, nature, art, science, designations, trade, medicine, law, engineering, technology, attitude, feelings, emotions, special attributes, etc., of a language. In addition the dictionaries of the languages in which they exist provide special information about those languages. In the legal field each word or pharase has a definite and particular meaning. Thus a legal dictionary is of even greater importance as each term used in a legal document determines a person`s freedom, rights, duties and property. The majority of laws in India are framed in English and then translated into Hindi. Thus in order to enact a particular law people of different languages have to first understand it in that language. Historically, the languages of courts and law in India and in its neighbouring countries were Persian and Arabic mixed with Urdu during the Mughal period, English during the British rule, and English and Hindi after independence. Today on one side English has taken the form of a global contact language while on the other the Indian Constitution has granted Hindi the status of a national language. In addition the Government of Uttar Pradesh has given Urdu the status of a second national language. These three languages, namely-Hindi, English and Urdu are the ones which are primarily used in courts, administrative offices, schools and universities. That is why this dictionary has been confined to these three languages.
