The Standards of Weights & Measurers Act, 1976 came into force in the year 1976. Necessities of human being in the society increased with the growth of population, its culture and civilization living standards of life, proper maintenance of possessions according to time, growth of scientific developments, all have told upon meeting the ends of consumptive demands. Commodities have also undergone a change in quantity and quality. Whether mass or an individual all have to take the commodities for their consumption in their day to day life. There were weights and measures in different forms in past. Society felt that there should be a uniform system of weights and measures and it be regulated and controlled by a legislation and this resulted in the act coming into existance in the year 1976. The object of this legislation was to establish standards of weights and measures, to regulated inter-state trade or commerce in weights and measures and other goods which are sold or distributed by weight, measures or number and also to provide for matters connected therewith or incidental thereto.
The object of this legislation has thus been achieved. The provisions of the Act have sought to be divided into eight parts
